What Are Incoterms?

Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) are internationally recognized standard trade terms used in domestic and international transactions. They define the responsibilities, costs, and risks between buyers and sellers.

Updated every decade by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the 2020 version clarifies several key aspects of international shipping responsibilities and modernizes terms for container shipping.

Key Changes in 2020 Edition

  • FCA now allows for on-board Bills of Lading with named port
  • CIP requires higher level of insurance coverage (Clause A)
  • DAT renamed to DPU (Delivered at Place Unloaded)
  • Security-related requirements now explicitly included
