What are the exact GMA pallet dimensions?

A standard GMA pallet measures 48 × 40 inches — 1,219 × 1,016 mm. The total height is approximately 122 mm (4.8 inches) for a standard stringer pallet. Block-style 48×40 pallets (not strictly GMA) reach 140–150 mm.

How much weight can a GMA pallet hold?

A typical hardwood GMA pallet is rated at approximately 1,270 kg (2,800 lbs) dynamic load and 900 kg (2,000 lbs) racking load. Static load capacity can reach 4,500 kg (10,000 lbs) on a flat surface. Actual capacity depends on wood species and build quality — always check the pallet supplier's spec sheet.

How many GMA pallets fit in a 53 ft trailer?

A 53 ft dry van (16,154 mm × 2,591 mm interior) fits 30 GMA pallets in a single floor tier — 15 rows × 2 columns, with the 1,016 mm side running along the trailer length and 1,219 mm across the width (2 × 1,219 = 2,438 mm, leaving ~150 mm clearance). Double-stacking yields 60 pallet positions for light goods.

What does GMA stand for?

GMA stands for Grocery Manufacturers Association (now the Consumer Brands Association). The association standardised the 48×40 inch pallet size for US grocery and consumer goods distribution in the mid-20th century. The 48×40 pallet is now the de-facto North American standard across retail, automotive, and manufacturing beyond grocery.

What is the difference between a GMA pallet and a block pallet?

A stringer pallet (the classic GMA design) uses three long boards (stringers) running the full length of the pallet, with deck boards nailed across them. Fork tines enter only from the short ends — 2-way entry. A block pallet uses nine wooden or plastic blocks between the top and bottom decks, creating openings on all four sides for 4-way fork entry. Block pallets are heavier but more durable and re-entry-friendly.

Do GMA pallets need to be heat-treated for export?

Yes. Any wooden pallet — including GMA pallets — used in international shipments must comply with ISPM 15. That requires heat treatment (HT) to a 56 °C core for 30 minutes, or methyl bromide fumigation (MB, now restricted in many countries). The pallet must bear the official IPPC stamp with the country code and treatment method. Pallets without the stamp may be quarantined or refused at import.

How do GMA pallets differ from EUR pallets?

The GMA pallet (1,219 × 1,016 mm) is slightly wider and uses stringer construction (2-way forklift entry). The EUR-1 pallet (1,200 × 800 mm) is narrower, uses nine-block construction (4-way entry), and is the European EPAL pool standard. Neither fits the other's racking system well — EUR racking beam spacing is designed for 1,200 mm pallets and does not accommodate 1,219 mm without adjustment.

Construction & stacking

The GMA stringer pallet uses three solid stringers running parallel to the 48-inch length. Fork tines enter from the 40-inch (1,016 mm) ends — 2-way forklift entry. Notched stringers allow 4-way hand pallet jack entry. GMA pallets do not interlock the same way block pallets do; use load stabilisers or stretch wrap when double-stacking.

Pallet exchange in the US

Unlike the EPAL pool, the US does not have a single national pallet exchange. CHEP, iGPS (plastic), and pallet brokers operate managed pools. Most retail shippers use one-way or rental arrangements. Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) maintains the 48×40 in dimensional standard but does not operate a pool.

Heat treatment & ISPM 15

Pallet wood used in international shipments must meet ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15). Compliant GMA pallets are heat-treated (HT) to 56 °C core temperature for 30 minutes, then stamped with the wheat-ear symbol, country code, and HT mark. Non-compliant pallets may be seized or returned at border inspection.
