HS Code Structure: Chapter, Heading, and Subheading Explained
Every HS code follows the same hierarchical structure — the first two digits are the chapter (broad product family), the next two digits form the heading (more specific category), and the last two digits of the 6-digit code define the subheading (the actual WCO classification level). Countries can extend the code further — the US adds 4 more digits for a 10-digit HTS code, the EU adds 2–4 more for an 8–10 digit TARIC/CN code — but the first 6 digits are universal.

Extended national codes
Beyond 6 digits, countries append their own digits. The US HTS code runs to 10 digits, the EU Combined Nomenclature to 8 digits (10 with TARIC extensions), and most countries have their own schedules.
