Certificate of Origin Generator — FAQ
What is a Certificate of Origin and when do I need one?
A Certificate of Origin (CO) is a trade document certifying the country where goods were manufactured or produced. It is required by customs authorities to determine applicable tariffs and to comply with trade agreements, preferential duty programs, and import regulations.
What is the difference between a non-preferential and preferential CO?
A non-preferential CO simply states where goods originate — it does not grant any tariff reduction. A preferential CO (e.g. EUR.1, Form A/GSP) proves origin under a specific trade agreement, entitling the importer to reduced or zero duties. This generator produces a generic non-preferential CO.
Does the CO need to be stamped by a Chamber of Commerce?
In most countries, yes — a CO must be certified and stamped by an authorized body such as a Chamber of Commerce or trade authority to be legally valid. This generator helps you prepare the form; certification must be done by the relevant authority.
What HS code should I use?
The Harmonized System (HS) code is a 6-digit international product classification code. Use the 6-digit global HS code; importing countries may require an extended 8- or 10-digit national tariff code. Your freight forwarder or customs broker can advise on the correct code.
Can I save my exporter information?
Yes — check the 'Remember my company info' box and your details (including logo) will be saved in your browser's local storage. The data never leaves your device.
Is this CO legally binding?
The document produced is a draft Certificate of Origin form. It becomes a legally valid certificate only when signed by an authorized signatory and certified/stamped by a recognized body such as a Chamber of Commerce.
