Loading Guide

Step-by-step curtainsider loading

Follow this sequence every time — skipping steps is how cargo shifts and axle limits get breached.

1

Plan your stop sequence before touching any cargo

List every delivery stop in route order. For LIFO loading you need to know the final stop before you load the first item. Assign each cargo item a stop number — this determines its physical position in the trailer. Do this in your load planning software, not on the dock.

2

Check floor load limits and axle weights

EU curtainsider trailers have a standard floor load limit of 5,000 kg/m². Exceeding it damages the trailer floor. At the same time, check that your planned load keeps the kingpin under 12,000 kg and the rear bogie under 21,000 kg. Heavy cargo near the cab loads the kingpin; heavy cargo near the door loads the bogie. Use a load planner to confirm before loading.

3

Load the last delivery stop first — deepest into the trailer

The cargo for your final stop (furthest city) goes in first and sits at the cab end of the trailer. This is LIFO: Last In, First Out. The last cargo loaded is the first accessed at delivery. Open both side curtains for access to the full trailer length. Place heavy items on the floor; lightweight items can be stacked where load limits allow.

4

Build forward stop by stop toward the door

Load stop N-1 behind stop N, continuing toward the door end. Leave no gaps between stop zones — unsecured void space lets cargo shift in transit. If stop volumes don't fill the zone neatly, use dunnage bags or load bars to fill the gap before moving to the next zone.

5

Load the first delivery stop last — nearest the door

The cargo for stop 1 (first delivery) loads last and sits at the door end. It will be the first cargo accessed when you open the curtains at the first stop. Double-check that the stop order in your loading plan matches the physical position in the trailer before closing up.

6

Secure with lashing straps and close the curtains

Apply lashing straps according to EN 12195 — minimum two straps per cargo unit. Curtainsiders provide lashing rings along the chassis rails and load bars across the trailer width. Check that no cargo presses against the curtain fabric, which is not a structural securing element. Document the completed load with photos and generate a loading instruction sheet for the driver.

Floor load limit

5,000 kg/m²

The standard EU curtainsider floor is rated at 5,000 kg per square metre. Concentrating heavy cargo in a small footprint — such as a machine on a pallet — can breach this limit even if total weight is legal. Spread heavy items across the full floor width and use load-spreading boards if needed.

Axle load limits

Kingpin 12,000 kg
Rear bogie 21,000 kg

Cargo placement directly determines axle loads. Shifting the load distribution by even 500 mm can push one axle group over its limit. Always validate with a live axle load calculator before departure — roadside inspections in most EU countries result in fines of €1,000–€10,000 per overloaded axle.

Securing standard

EN 12195

All cargo in EU road transport must be secured to EN 12195 standard. For curtainsiders this means: minimum lashing force equals 50% of cargo weight in forward direction, 25% laterally. Curtain fabric is not a securing element — it protects from weather only. Use load bars, lashing straps through floor rings, and friction mats.
