Most common EU trailer. Side curtains give full lateral access. Standard for general cargo, pallets, and multi-drop routes.
How to verify your load is EU-legal
Run through this checklist before every cross-border run — dimensional violations at border crossings result in prohibition orders and fines.
Identify your vehicle combination class
EU rules vary by combination type: solo truck (rigid), truck + semi-trailer (articulated), truck + full trailer (road train). The most common combination for international freight is the 5-axle articulated: 3-axle tractor + 2-axle semi-trailer. This combination has a 40,000 kg GVW limit and a maximum length of 16.5 m for the trailer alone, or 18.75 m for the combination.
Check GVW and axle limits for your route countries
The EU standard is 40,000 kg GVW for a 5-axle combination, with exceptions to 44,000 kg for intermodal (container) transport. However, some countries enforce stricter limits: the UK (since Brexit) follows its own rules, Switzerland limits GVW to 40,000 kg for non-motorway routes, and Norway applies seasonal load restrictions in spring thaw. Always check the specific limits for each country on your route.
Verify height restrictions for your route
There is no single EU-wide maximum height — instead, infrastructure limits apply. Most EU motorway bridges allow at least 4.0–4.5 m clearance, but older roads, tunnels, and urban routes may be lower. Mega trailers (3.0 m interior height) typically run at 4.2–4.3 m total vehicle height. For loads exceeding 4.0 m total height, most EU countries require a route survey and, in some cases, a police escort.
Check width limits — 2.55 m is the EU maximum
The EU standard maximum vehicle width is 2.55 m (2.6 m for insulated vehicles). Trailer body width is typically 2.55 m, with the interior being 2.48 m on standard trailers and 2.40–2.45 m on reefers. Any load that extends beyond the vehicle width requires side markers and, above certain overhangs, a permit and escort vehicle. Oversized width loads may only travel during daylight hours in some countries.
Calculate axle loads before departure
Even if your GVW is within the limit, individual axle groups must be checked. EU standard limits: steer axle 7,500 kg, drive axle tandem 19,000 kg (or 11,500 kg single), trailer bogie 21,000 kg. The kingpin (5th wheel) load is typically limited to 12,000 kg. Use a load planning tool to validate axle loads from cargo positioning — total weight compliance does not guarantee axle compliance.
Apply for permits if any limit is exceeded
Oversize or overweight loads require advance permits from each country transited. Permits specify the route, time window, and any escort requirements. In Germany, permits for abnormal loads are issued by the Straßenverkehrsamt; in France by the Préfecture. Most EU permits must be applied for 5–10 working days in advance. Emergency permits are rare and expensive. Plan dimensional compliance at the loading stage — not at the border.

National variations
The UK applies its own post-Brexit weight rules. Switzerland, Norway, and Turkey follow separate agreements. Scandinavia allows higher GVW (up to 60,000+ kg) on national roads but reverts to EU limits at borders. Eastern EU countries sometimes have lower limits on secondary roads. Never assume EU standard applies on every road.
Intermodal bonus weight
Truck and trailer combinations carrying ISO shipping containers or swap bodies on combined transport (road + rail or road + short-sea) qualify for a 44,000 kg GVW allowance under EC Directive 96/53. The bonus applies when the road leg is part of a documented intermodal chain — not for road-only container moves.
Oversize permit thresholds
Any vehicle or load exceeding standard width (2.55 m) or height (4.0 m as a general threshold, though no formal EU-wide height limit exists) requires advance permits from each country on the route. Permit requirements, timing, and escort rules vary significantly — Germany, France, and Belgium each have different rules. Apply 5–10 working days before the move.
