Note: Insulation walls on a reefer trailer reduce all interior dimensions compared to a dry van of the same overall length. The 53ft reefer interior is typically 15,849 mm long (vs 16,154 mm for a dry van), 2,464 mm wide (vs 2,591 mm), and 2,591 mm tall (vs 2,743 mm). The refrigeration unit adds roughly 1,800 kg of tare weight, reducing available payload. Always verify dimensions and payload with your carrier.

Pallet capacity, temperature, and FMCSA weight limits

Pallet capacity

Standard GMA pallets (48 × 40 in) in 15,849 × 2,464 mm floor

GMA pallets (1,219 × 1,016 mm) 26 floor positions
GMA pallets — turned 90° up to 30 positions
Euro pallets (800 × 1,200 mm) 26 positions
Floor load limit 4,300 kg/m²

Typical for insulated reefer floors. Lower than dry van due to floor insulation construction.

Weight limits (FMCSA)

Federal bridge law limits for 5-axle combinations

Max GVW (federal) 36,287 kg
Steer axle limit 5,443 kg
Tandem drive axle limit 15,422 kg
Tandem rear axle limit 15,422 kg
Typical net payload ~18,500 kg

Bridge formula: The federal bridge formula limits tandem axle groups based on axle spacing. For a standard 5-axle semi-trailer, the practical payload ceiling is roughly 40,000–44,000 lbs (~18,000–20,000 kg). The reefer unit adds ~4,000 lbs (~1,800 kg) of tare vs a dry van, reducing available payload accordingly.

Temperature & cold chain

The 53ft reefer is equipped with a diesel-powered refrigeration unit (Thermo King or Carrier) capable of maintaining temperatures from -20°F to +70°F (-29°C to +21°C). Pre-cooling the trailer to target temperature before loading is critical — the reefer unit maintains temperature, it does not pull it down quickly.
